What it is
A residential proxy network relays traffic through consumer connections — typically recruited via apps that pay users for bandwidth, or bundled silently into free software. To anyone receiving the traffic it originates from a normal home ISP, in a normal city, on a normal consumer ASN, because it does.
Why it matters for Minecraft
It breaks the cheapest useful signal. Datacenter ranges are easy to identify and rarely contain real players, so blocking or challenging them is high-yield and low-risk. Residential proxies sit exactly where your actual players sit, so the same rule would block real people. An attacker paying for residential exit nodes buys their way past origin-based scoring entirely.
What still works
Behaviour and identity, not origin. A residential address tells you nothing about whether the client behind it is a person — so verification and fingerprinting keep working when reputation does not. Detection services classify known proxy exits too, which recovers part of the signal, but the honest framing is that origin scoring is now one input among several rather than the answer.
Common questions
Should I block all residential proxies?+
Usually not outright. Some of your genuine players use VPNs for ordinary reasons, and false positives cost you real people. Challenging them rather than blocking them keeps the door open while raising the cost for automated abuse.
How is a residential proxy different from a VPN?+
A commercial VPN terminates on the provider's own infrastructure, which is identifiable as such. A residential proxy terminates on a consumer connection, which is not. That is precisely why it is harder to filter.
